In the early 1950s, Walt Disney had a dream of creating a family theme park that both parents and children could enjoy together. Location was key. Disney wanted his park to be accessible to the Los Angeles metropolitan area and he needed the selected location to be large enough to contain mountains, rivers and castles. The Standford Research Institute, commissioned by Disney, located a 160-acre orange grove in a rural area outside of L.A. This orange grove in tiny Anaheim would eventually grow to become the largest tourist attraction in Southern California. Disney's dream was finally realized in 1955 as crowds began pouring in to visit such attractions as Adventureland and Main Street USA. The crowds never stopped coming. Once rural Anaheim is now a major vacation destination. People from all over the country and all over the world spend thousands of hours, and thousands of dollars, experiencing Disneyland and beyond. Anaheim, and the immediately surrounding area, is now home to 5 major amusement parks including Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Adventure City, Universal Studios and SeaWorld. Besides theme parks, Anaheim is home to excellent shopping, museums, two exciting dinner shows: Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament and Pirate's Dinner Adventure, and numerous other attractions. Only a 30-minute drive from Los Angeles, and very near the beach, Anaheim is the perfect destination for the entire family. Next time you're in the area, be sure to spend plenty of time at Disneyland but also take a day to explore all that Anaheim has to offer--you won't be disappointed.
